Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has added to its repertory of storybook adaptations with an elegant new production drawn from the work of children’s author, Leo Lionni. Swimmy, Frederick, and Inch by Inch, the three award-winning tales that Mermaid has chosen for its tribute to a beloved author and is coming to the Lufkin Temple Theater on Saturday, May 7th. Tickets ($5-$10) go on sale at the Temple Theater box office Thursday, April 7th. The show is appropriate for children ages 3 to 7. The box office is open weekday’s noon-5:30, or tickets may be purchased by phone at 936-633-5454. The Temple Theater is located on the Angelina College campus in Lufkin. Swimmy, Frederick, and Inch by Inch is part of the Angelina Arts Alliance’s Family Matinee Series.
Leo Lionni’s exquisite collage works are ideally suited to Mermaid’s unique approach to stage adaptation. The Swimmy, Frederick, and Inch by Inch images are strikingly beautiful and their texts are whimsical yet wistful. Swimmy is a tiny insignificant fish in the vast ocean who uses ingenuity to fend off danger. Frederick, a mouse who is a poet from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, makes everday life an artful experience. The story of Inch by Inch features a loveable inchworm who is proud of his facility for measuring absolutely everything, including a robin’s tail, a flamingo’s neck, a toucan’s beak and a nightingale’s song. All these creatures provide wonderful scope for translation to puppet theatre through the gentle storytelling style which has brought international acclaim to Mermaid Theatre.
So round up the children and the entire family and come have fun and play with Mermaid’s Theatre’s Swimmy, Frederick, and Inch by Inch at the Temple Theater on Saturday, May 7th at 2:30pm. The doors open at 1:45pm.
