Angelina Arts Alliance News Release - July 25, 2011
Contact: Joanna Temple, Marketing & Communications - 936-633-3220
Beginning Friday, August 12th, Angelina Arts Alliance’s 2011-2012 Season performers from RIOULT Dance/New York, will be in Lufkin to cast young dancers ages 9 to 13, to perform in their modern dance “Small Steps, Tiny Revolutions” at the Temple Theater. The company features the choreography of Pascal Rioult, who once performed with the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company. All those who wish to audition can register online at angelinaarts.org or complete an application at any of the five area dance-related facilities, including Nacogdoches. Young dancers are asked to be available on Friday, August 12th at Academy of Gymnastics & Dance in Lufkin for a 10am-1pm workshop. Auditions will be held at the same location on Saturday, August 13th from 9:30am-1pm. 13 to 16 dancers will be cast and must be available for all rehearsals (September 8th-15th) and three performances (September 16th-17th). Performances are part of the Angelina Arts Alliance’s Schooltime and Family Matinee Series.
From the audition, selected children will perform with the company in its performances of Small Steps, Tiny Revolutions, is a modern dance piece which tells the story of a young boy whose father forbids him to follow his desire to dance. The children who are selected for the performance will play fantastical creatures in the boy's dream-like world. Aside from the age specification (9 to 13), the only other audition requirement is that the children are comfortable movers. There's no requirement that they're highly skilled dancers; however, they will be expected to learn choreography. RIOULT decided to hold auditions because not only does the company need the children for its performance, but it also gives RIOULT the opportunity to connect to the community in a very meaningful way.
