“Intergalactic Nemesis” creator Jason Neulander didn’t set out to create a new medium 20 years ago when he collaborated on an obscure sci-fi radio play performed in a coffeehouse where his friend worked, but that is what eventually happened. Sporadic performances over the years for small audiences helped the play’s cult status grow, but when Neulander was invited to bring the production to a 2,400-seat theater, its largest audience ever, it just didn’t feel right, he said. He came up with an idea: project comic book art onto screens to create a hybrid radio play/comic book experience. Hence, the world’s first “live graphic novel” was born.

Three actors voice dozens of characters in the campy, old-school adventure story. Audiences will see and hear the craft that goes into the production. One person creates all of the sound effects live, blowing through a toy whistle and shaking a box of macaroni and cheese to conjure a speeding train, for example. A pianist creates a score described as orchestral, and the many comic book panels that illustrate the story require thousands of hand-triggered projection cues. The audience adds to the production as well, cheering for the good guys and booing the villains, taking on the form of a classic melodrama, and proving this retro radio serial graphic extravaganza is fun for all.
