When most people think of family bands, images come to mind of “The Patridge Family” cast in red velvet vests and bell-bottoms. Cherryholmes, with their down-home shirt and jeans attire and stomp-inducing bluegrass jams, blow such imagery to pieces. Angelina Arts Alliance brings their special brand of bluegrass to the Temple Theater Saturday, February 5th at 7:30pm. Tickets ($27-$35) are available at the Temple Theater box office, open weekdays noon-5:30, or you may purchase tickets by phone at 936-633-5454. The Temple Theater is located on the Angelina College campus in Lufkin. Cherryholmes is sponsored by Urgent Doc and The Lufkin Daily News. Tenth Anniversary Season Sponsor is Temple-Inland.
Sometimes a great musical tradition is built out of tragedy. After the death of their eldest daughter, Jere and Sandy Cherryholmes, and their four children piled into an ancient van and trundled west to a bluegrass festival. What they heard there changed the course of their lives forever. “We needed family therapy”, said Jere, the patriarch of the Cherryholmes family and leader of the band. “I decided it might be helpful for us to get a bunch of instruments and start jamming together, so that’s what we did.” They’ve been playing music full time since 2002 and as the kids have grown, so has their music. With their roots based in bluegrass, Celtic, and jazz music, Cherryholmes has stormed to the top of the music world since winning the 2005 International Bluegrass Music Association Award for Entertainer of the Year.
Music for Cherryholmes will always be a family affair. The children were quick studies and obviously gifted in music. Cia, plays the banjo with a hard driving style that is all her own. BJ adds an excitement to the music with his mastery of the fiddle and mandolin. Skip is a masterful arranger and wows the audience with his guitar picking, singing and showmanship. And the youngest, Molly, amazes everyone with her left-handed fiddle and song writing abilities. Sandy, the mom, keeps the driving style going on the mandolin and Papa Jere is the backbone of the band on the upright bass. Of course they all sing in beautiful harmonies from Celtic and jazz to R&B and blues.
Chances are, you’ve never encountered a family quite like Cherryholmes. But on February 5th, you’ll be glad you did.
Tickets for Cherryholmes are on sale at the Temple Theater box office. This show will be a sell-out so call early for best seating--936-633-5454.
