ANGELINA ARTS ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES 2013-14 Season

“Come Take a Journey…”

 

Angelina Arts Alliance begins season subscription sales on May 3rd for its 2013-14 Premier Series at the Temple Theater in Lufkin.  While single tickets go on sale for each show 30 days prior to every event, a season subscription is a guarantee audience members will never miss a sold-out performance.  From a bona fide Broadway star to a bluegrass phenomenon, a world-famous opera star to a cutting edge tap sensation -- the coming season of attractions is sure to thrill longtime audience members and newcomers alike, with an enticing mix of outstanding artists.

The Thirteenth Anniversary Premier Series opens September 14th with FEET DON’T FAIL ME NOW!      A rapid-fire tap extravaganza described as “…brilliantly danced”, and “Flat-out amazing!” Rhythmic Circus mixes together four innovative dancers, an infectious seven-piece band, vocalists, and a very unique, one-man a cappella beat-box sensation and the result is a truly unique music and dance experience that appeals to all ages. AND, after appearing in Lufkin, the company travels to New York for its Broadway debut.  

Featured vocalist Delores King Williams accompanied by The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra honor the legendary “First Lady of Song” on Sunday, October 27th with A TRIBUTE TO ELLA FITZGERALD. For more than fifty years, Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the U.S. with 13 Grammy awards and 40 million albums sold to her credit. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra is a 17-piece big band which specializes in re-creating classic performances from the past with historical accuracy. It will play original arrangements by superstars, such as Count Basie, Billy May and more. These arrangements have not been heard live by audiences in more than 40 years.  

How about a hearty serving of laughter, dished up by Pat Hazell, writer, playwright and veteran stand-up comedian? On Saturday, November 23rd come see THE WONDER BREAD YEARS, a humorous and heartwarming salute to baby boomers and pop culture. Pat, one of the four original writers for NBC’s Seinfield, shares his comedic view of growing up a ‘boomer’. Showtime declared Pat Hazell, “One of the Five Funniest People in America,” so come grab a slice of ‘wonder’-ful laughs.    

Imagine the pure, rich vibrant tone of expertly played handbells. NOW, imagine the most famous - and widely considered the best – handbell group in the United States and you have the SONOS Handbell Ensemble. The internationally acclaimed SONOS will join world-famous FREDERICA VON STADE for an unforgettable ringing, singing Christmas celebration on Friday, December 6th.  Von Stade, a dazzling mezzo-soprano, is known as one of the truly great singers of our day. She has been performing leading roles with

New York’s Metropolitan Opera for over forty years. This very special Christmas concert is filled with traditional Christmas musical selections and will be an inspiring beginning to your family’s holiday season.

   The New Year starts with a ROAR Saturday, January 18, 2014, as RHONDA VINCENT AND THE RAGE bring their phenomenal bluegrass to the Temple Theater stage. The awards just keep coming for Rhonda and the Rage including “Song of the Year” and a coveted “Entertainer of the Year” award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA).  Rhonda received a staggering seven consecutive IBMA “Female Vocalist of the Year” awards (2000-2006). She is among the most complete and accomplished artists of her generation – in any genre. The Society for Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America designated Rhonda its “Entertainer of the Year” for 2002-2011 inclusive – an unrivaled-ten year streak!

Few stories are as timeless -- or reveal the courage and resilience of the human spirit -- as THE MIRACLE WORKER On Tuesday March 4th, bring the whole family to see this stirring dramatization of the early life of Helen Keller which has been mesmerizing audiences for decades.  Young Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, finds her way into the world of knowledge and understanding with the help of Annie Sullivan, her gifted tutor.  In some of the most turbulent and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion to triumph over her physical disabilities.  The Miracle Worker is a story of victory over unbelievable odds -- accomplished through conviction, perseverance, and love.

The New York Post calls him “The greatest entertainer on Broadway today – period!” Acclaimed performer, Mandy Patinkin, will come to Lufkin Texas on Friday, March 28. His concert, MANDY PATINKIN: DRESS CASUAL, is a chance to see him do what he likes best, reaching out to live audiences with the power and the passion of popular song.  Mandy belongs to the special breed of singer who doesn’t merely dramatize songs, but incorporates them into his very being.  His interpretations of popular standards, superbly accompanied by Paul Ford on piano, come straight from the heart, mesmerizing audiences from coast to coast. Mandy Patinkin is a Tony Award® winner, an Emmy® Award winner, a Golden Globe Award winner and a familiar face for fans of the TV series Criminal Minds and Homeland.  

               In addition to the Premier Series, the 2013-14 season will offer three Family Matinee events for everyone to enjoy  including:   Sunday, September 15, Feet Don't Fail Me Now!, Saturday, October 19, Alice in Wonderland, and Saturday, February 1, Stuart Little.
