Mercury Chamber Orchestra

Mercury is a groundbreaking chamber ensemble that seeks to redefine the orchestra with performances that faithfully present the music of great composers in settings that make audience members an equal part of the experience—not simply a spectator.

In its 16th season, Mercury musicians perform on period instruments similar in style and sound to those used by composers of the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods, which creates a distinctive and exciting sound, true to the composer’s intent. Mercury musicians stand while they play giving each performance energy and vitality in any setting – from the concert hall stage to small intimate gatherings.

In recent seasons, Mercury has collaborated with music luminaries such as mezzo soprano Susan Graham, countertenor David Daniels, soprano Laura Claycomb, and conductor Harry Bicket.

Based in Houston, Texas, Mercury has received praise and awards for their education programs and are a recent National Endowment for the Arts grant winner for their upcoming touring children’s show about Science and Music. In 2014, Yale University awarded Mercury and YES Prep West a national Distinguished Partnership Award for their innovative team-teaching collaboration.

Barefoot in The Park

Fifty years ago Montana Rep began; just over fifty years ago Barefoot in the Park was produced on Broadway, jump starting the career of a true giant in American play writing, Neil Simon. It seems fitting to honor the play this season that put Neil Simon on the map, and celebrate 50 years with one of the best theatre companies in the country, Montana Repertory Theatre.

Barefoot in the Park is a comedy of the heart. Paul Bratter is mister straight. Corie is his new wife who dedicates her life to the pursuit of fun. As the ecstasy of the honeymoon gives way to the reality of setting up housekeeping in a five-flight walk-up apartment in Greenwich Village, the harmony of marriage turns to comical discord. The mother-in-law complains alot---The middle-aged neighbor upstairs flirts too much. Joy turns to anguish. But there is little doubt that the young people will kiss and make up in the end, just as there's little doubt that the mother and the neighbor will find each other. This Neil Simon classic was made into a film in 1967 starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, and like the best romantic comedies, explores love, relationship, family, marriage, the pangs of loss, and the joy of reunion.

Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 movie, 42nd Street tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical Pretty Lady. When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star. This sparkling new production will be directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival.
